If there’s one thing I look forward to when I head back to London for a visit it’s a packet of Walkers Crisps. Or rather several packets. As a Brit who’s lived in Toronto for 7 years, it hasn’t been too hard to find many of my favourite English foods here. We even used to frequent a downtown store stocking just English foods, including Walkers Crisps. Sadly though, the store closed about a year ago.
Walkers Crisps (by the way crisps = chips in North American) come in a variety of flavours. I’ve tried all of them and my top 3 are Smoky Bacon, Cheese and Onion, Worcester (pronounced Woost-er) Sauce and Tomato Ketchup. Ready Salted is also high on my list though… in fact, when I come to think about it, I pretty much like them all. And each flavour has a fascinating little story behind it.

In the world of hot sauces I find it difficult to find a delicious everyday hot sauce. A hot sauce that adds a little kick & an excellent flavor that you can add to just about anything. While Tabasco and other Louisiana style hot sauces are good, my mouth doesn’t begin to salivate just thinking about them. And other hot sauces that do taste excellent must be diluted to actually enjoy them. And that’s not really an option when you want to splash some on a burger and/or fries.
But some years back I ran across Crystal® Classic Habanero Sauce while on vacation and fell in love. While some people complained that it was too vinegary, the taste was just amazing in my opinion. It had a comfortable heat to it and wasn’t something I had to worry about using too much of (as is the case with many of my other hot sauces).

Last night the pickings at home were slim and I didn’t feel like going out so I quickly threw together a meatball & tater tot casserole concoction. It wasn’t bad (with ketchup & hot sauce), but not exactly mouth watering either…admittedly not one of the better things I’ve come up with. That said, here’s the recipe. By all means make this your own creation and if you figure out a tasty variation, please share.
